Once a family completes the pre-qualifying interview at our Habitat office in Naples or Immokalee, they receive an application which must be returned completed including all required documentation. The documentation is then verified for its accuracy and completeness. A criminal background check and credit check are completed at this time.
If a file is approved, a selection volunteer arranges an appointment and visits the family’s current home, assessing their need, ability to repay and ability to partner. A report is then submitted on their findings. The reports are presented and discussed at the Selection Committee Meetings which occur the second Thursday of each month. The Selection Committee will then recommend acceptance, deferral or denial. The application, reports and recommendation are then presented to the Board of Directors for final approval.
When final approval is received the family begins their required 500 sweat equity hours. After 400 hours have been completed the family may select which new Habitat home will be theirs.
